Help & Advice

Are kids bikes expensive?

The kids bikes we sell are proper bikes not toys. This means that they use much higher quality materials and are basically small versions of adult bikes. This means they last longer and provide great fun and enjoyment for kids learning to ride. We strongly recommend using "trainer" bikes without stabilisers for kids from 2 years old. They can then usually move to a bigger bikes without the need for stabilisers.

What are Trainer Bikes?

Posted | 3rd Jul 2013

blog_img_scootIn the good old days bike shops would remove the pedals and cranks from kids bikes so that they could push them along with their feet, a bit like a scooter. This meant that they learnt the essential balance required to ride a bike. If they wanted to go faster they picked their feet up and went “woohoo” then using their feet for brakes.

This has now led to manufacturers realising that stabilisers are a pain and can actually slow down the learning process. After all balance is the key skill and if the stabiliser does the balancing how is the child supposed to learn how to do it. The new trainer bikes are designed especially for training youngsters.

We have customers who have started from as youn as 1. The great thing with the trainer bikes is that once the child has moved onto a proper bike the trainer bike gets handed on to either younger sibling or family friend.

Fantastic Kids Bikes from Frog

Lightweight kids bikes from frog bikes

Great name and great bikes, Speeds is delighted to confirm that we are now a FROG Bikes stockist. FROG Bikes are “real” bikes not toys designed specifically to suit children. They are super light weight making them fantastic to ride and very easy to handle. The bikes come in really bight colour schemes and cover ages range from age 2 to 14. See our fit chart below to select the right size.

Frog bikes for kids

In contrast to many children’s bikes, Frog bikes are sized by the leg length rather than age, as this is the most reliable way of getting the right size of bike for each child. Age alone isn’t a reliable measure as there is a large spread of “normal” leg lengths & heights for each age.

Please take the time to measure the rider’s inside leg. It’s easy to measure:

  • Stand the child in socks against a wall
  • Place a small book between their legs, as high as is comfortable
  • Ask the child to move away and measure from the top of the book to the floor, in cm.

Once you have measured the inside leg, use this table to find the right size of bike for your child. Note we give the MINIMUM inside leg length for each bike, with the saddle at its lowest setting. At this height, the child will safely and comfortably be able to get their feet on the ground. Don’t worry – Frog Bikes have long seat posts, so the saddle can be raised a long way as the rider grows.

Frog Bike Minimum inside leg (cm) Approximate minimum child height (cm) Approximate minimum age
Tadpole 34 98 2-3
Frog 43 43 104 3-4
Frog 48 48 110 4-5
Frog 52 52 116 5-6
Frog 55 55 122 6-7
Frog 60 MTB 60 130 8-10
Frog 62 62 134 8-10
Frog 69 69 147 10-12
Frog 73 73 158 12-14

Of course all children have different length arms and torsos too, so to ensure a comfortable riding position, the handlebar height can be tailored, and saddles can be slid backwards and forwards on their rails. (These adjustments are easy to do and just need an allen key; instructions are in the manual that comes with each bike).
